Recent research has shown that sugar is not only a primary source of excess calories but also the reason why cancer cells absorb high fructose corn syrup. This fact warns us that we should avoid consuming sugar and all kinds of food containing sugar.
A few years ago, researchers from the University of California Los Angeles found that pancreatic tumor cells use fructose to divide and reproduce, contradicting the earlier assumption that all sugars are the same. ‘’Tumor cells, which feed on glucose and fructose, use these sugars in two different ways’’, said the research team.
Their results, published in the journal Cancer Research, may help explain previous studies that have linked fructose intake with pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest forms of the disease.
“These findings show that cancer cells can easily metabolize fructose in order to increase proliferation,” written in 2010 by Dr. Anthony Heaney and colleagues from UCLA’s Jonsson Cancer Center.
“They have great significance for oncology patients who were prescribed refined fructose based diet, and show that reducing the intake of refined fructose or fructose-treated termination actions may disrupt cancer growth,” he said.
Americans, far more than people in most other industrialized countries, eat an incredible amount of fructose, mostly high-fructose corn syrup, which is a mixture of fructose and glucose and is used mainly in soft drinks, bread and a range of other processed foods.
Amazingly, there is still no consensus among politicians, industry experts and health professionals about whether the increased high-fructose corn-syrup and other sweet foods increase the “national waistline” or not. This is probably why there is not more public education about the effects of consuming high-fructose, processed foods.
What is Glucose-Fructose Syrup?
You have reached for one cookie and then realized that you have eaten a whole box? You satisfy your thirst drinking sodas, but still want to drink another glass?
The reason is not lack of self-discipline rather than a type of sugar that is found in most manufactured products.
Its name is glucose-fructose syrup.
Glucose-fructose syrup (High-fructose corn syrup, HFCS) is a type of corn syrup produced in a way that glucose is converted into fructose, with enzymes’ help, in order to obtain the desired sweetness. The mixture of glucose and fructose is called glucose-fructose syrup.
Manufacturers often use glucose-fructose syrup because it is much cheaper than sugar. In addition, HFCS extends product’s shelf life. Of course that such an additive is very “welcome” in the fast food world.
Glucose-fructose syrup is widely used as a sugar substitute in many soft drinks, juices, yogurt, cereals, pastries and instant soups.
Unfortunately, like many other additives, glucose-fructose syrup has a devastating effect on our health.
Why is Glucose-Fructose Syrup Dangerous?
Glucose-fructose syrup is not only affecting our line, It is a poison to our body and brain as well.
Fructose, like glucose, is a simple sugar. The only difference between them is that fructose enters our gut slower than glucose, and then slowly enters the blood stream – this is why its absorption is limited.
Fructose arrives to the liver, through bloodstream, where it is either converted to glucose and stored as glycogen, or is converted into fat and stored in the vicinity of vital organs.
Research on two groups of children has shown that fructose slows metabolism and causes obesity.
In addition, it was found that the glucose-fructose syrup contains significant amounts of mercury, which is used in the processing of glucose.
All Kinds of Sugar Feeds Tumor Cells
The truth about sugar is widely known and loudly expressed in public. The American Heart Association, for example, says that too much sugar of any kind will not only make your waist line grow, but it will also increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.
A number of states, including New York and California, are considering the introduction of taxes on sugary fizzy drinks to financially be able to cover the costs of treating patients who suffer from diseases caused by obesity, which are covered by government health insurance scheme. However, these taxes have encountered the successful and powerful opposition, which are basically groups who say that sugar is just sugar.
Heaney team has proved that during an experiment, increased pancreatic cancer cells were fed with glucose and fructose. Tumor cells have progressed to both types of sugar, and are particularly blossomed with fructose.
“It is important to emphasize that the fructose’s metabolism is different than glucose metabolism”, the team wrote.
“We believe that this research has a lot of implications on public health. Let us hope that, at the federal level, we will show some effort in order to take a step backwards when it comes to intake of high-fructose corn syrup in our diets, “Heaney says in a statement.
In the period between 1970 and 1990, the consumption of high fructose in the United States rose to 1000 percent, and the obesity epidemic began to be considered seriously.
Other Diseases Associated With Diabetes Diet
High-fructose corn syrup has also been associated with other medical conditions and diseases:
- A diet rich in corn syrup causes the body to produce excess uric acid, which worsens gout – a condition caused by high levels of uric acid – according to a study published in March 2012 in the “Nutrition” journal.
- Researchers at Duke University in North Carolina said that the consumption of high-fructose foods can worsen nonalcoholic fatty liver disease by exhausting their supply in critically important molecules called ATP, which produce energy for the formation of liver cells (and other cells in the body) and important cellular processes, including metabolism, reports Science Daily.
- A study published in the Journal of Nephrology reveals that eating “diet fructose” worsens kidney disease by inhibiting intestinal absorption of calcium and causing a vitamin D deficiency.
