If you haven’t heard that parents are superheroes before, we have a story that will prove it!
A parent would do anything for his children, including risking his life for the sake of them.
This is exactly what one superhero dad did!
Ray Lucas rushed into a burning house to save his twins!
On the 17th of July, Ray and his girlfriend, Shi’Ann Brown, had gone to visit the corner store to buy some milk. However, when they came back home, what they saw was a horror!
Their house in Michigan was engulfed in flames while his twin daughters were trapped inside.
The mother saw the scene and broke down. She was panic-struck but was doing her best to ask their neighbors for help.
Take a look at the interview:
Lucas, 23, recalled:
“I was speechless. Action took over me. I ran into the house to get my babies. I’m looking at it as a father. I did anything that any other father would do or should do.“
The fire had quickly spread through the three floors and had almost reached the basement where Malaysia and Milan were resting.
The twins were in their cribs, and their dad feared that the Fire Department would reach there in time, so he decided to take matters into his own hands.
When the man entered the burning house, nothing was visible due to the flames. Thankfully, he knew his way around his house and headed straight to the basement.
When he reached their cribs and touched his kids, he was extremely happy that they responded to his contact.
One of the twins was lying down while the other was standing up in the crib, quietly. He believes they were in shock because they were surrounded by fire and smoke.
Yet, Ray had no time to waste. He grabbed his children, held them against his chest to protect them from the blaze, and made his way up and outside.
The smoke and fire were terrifying, but nothing could stop him now.
He then handed his daughters to their mother, but, to his horror, he realized that his niece was trapped in the house as well!
The brave man ran back inside the house to look for her, but couldn’t find the girl.
He then ran straight to the backyard and saw her through the second-story window.
He then ordered her to jump through the window and caught her with his bare hands.
He later said:
“I was ecstatic my babies were OK and everybody was able to walk away from the situation. We didn’t lose anyone.”
However, the accident had its tolls, Lucas and the twins suffered serious burns.
“My arms burned, both ears burned, right side of face burned, and my neck was burned.”
He suffered from second and third-degree burns and had turned blind for three days, as his corneas were completely damaged and had swelled up due to the high exposure to smoke.
Fortunately, even though doctors told him that he might not get back his vision, he eventually did.
“My vision I feel is back to normal, it could be better.“
Even though he has regained his eyesight, the extreme burns he has suffered have prevented him from performing day-to-day activities.
The two little girls, Malaysia and Milan, had also sustained serious burns. Therefore, they were taken to the Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit to be treated in the intensive care unit.
Milan suffered from second and third-degree burns on the back of her legs and her feet, while her sister Malaysia sustained second to third-degree burns on her eyes, arms, and cheeks.
Malaysia needs to undergo exercise and physical training to get back the mobility in her arms and to loosen her joints.
The father and the twins had to spend 5 days in the ICU. The doctors told Lucas his burns would go away in time as long as he took the right precautions.
The brave father later spoke of the trauma, claiming he is “mentally in pain with burns. It was a lot on me mentally. I’ve never been in a situation like that before.“
Moreover, the family lost their home and all their possessions in the fire.
The reason for the fire will be investigated, but Lucas believes that the foundation of the house was in ruins which is why it caught on fire. He said:
“The house didn’t burn all the way down, but it’s a lost cause. Everyone’s possessions were gone from smoke damage or flames.“
Additionally, the medical bills were quite expensive. The family had moved to Detroit and were still sorting out their living situation.
“It’s still not real to me… the situation is still so surreal to me.”
The tragedy has left numerous people heartbroken, and the community in Detroit has rallied to their cause and has created a GoFundMe page to help them rebuild their lives.
Although the initial goal was set at $40,000, so far, over 13,000 people have donated to this cause, which has raised more than $489,000.
According to the GoFundMe page:
“The babies and their father Ray continue to heal physically, mentally, and emotionally and their mother Shi’Ann continues to deal with mental and emotional turmoil as the family strives to heal recover and recuperate.
The family is seeking to obtain a home and furnishing for the home and take care of their baby’s needs short and long-term needs, clothing for the parents and babies, and paying for medical supplies and medical bills. The family states that they will use the donations and contributions wisely to fulfill their needs.
Again, words cannot express Ray and Shi’Ann and their family’s gratitude and appreciation of your support through the Go Fund Me donations as we journey to recover from this storm and life-changing experience. “
We pray for the family and hope that the brave parents and their twins will manage to rebuild their home again soon, and will get their normal lives back!
