Botched Microblading Procedure Leaves Woman With Four Eyebrows

The late 2010s brought numerous beauty trends, but full and well-shaped eyebrows became a must.

Microblading is a popular procedure, and it is a form of tattooing which lasts for 2-3 years. Namely, a trained esthetician uses a hand-held microblade to transfer semi-permanent pigment just beneath the skin.

Celebrity makeup artist and brow specialist (a.k.a The Eyebrow DoctorPiret Aava, explains that a person can choose to get everything, from a very natural light finish to a beautifully bold brow. She adds that a client chooses a color that matches the natural hair color and skin undertone. Then, the brow area is cleaned and numbed for the treatment, and next, the artist uses a little handheld tool to manually draw hair strokes.

Yet, the procedure does not come without risks, and a woman from Kansas City regretted trying it. She shared her story to warn others not to make her mistake, and always carefully choose their esthetician for microblading services.

Jami Ledbetter was born without brows and she was thrilled that her daughters bought her a Groupon voucher to get eyebrows semi-permanently tattooed on. However, the mom of three says she was too embarrassed to leave her home, after the discounted procedure went badly wrong in November 2018.

The artist that performed the procedure was not well trained, and she ended up looking like she had four eyebrows. She explained that she looked like she was really surprised, and her boyfriend broke up with her because of her eyebrows.

Ledbetter was so appalled by the results of the microblading that she only went to work and food shopping for fear of anyone seeing her botched brows. She even said that the entire skin area was pretty painful, and even though she wanted to have a good attitude, it burned a lot and felt bruised.

Then, she turned to Kara Gutierrez, a licensed and insured tattoo artist, who specializes in permanent cosmetics and tattoo removal. She owns the salon Spot On Beauty in Lee’s Summit.

When she saw Ledbetter’s badly botched brows for the first time in February, she was stunned.

Yet, she decided to help Ledbetter, so she eventually got her normal appearance back, after several sessions of LI-FT, which lightens the pigment in her skin. Yet, the removal procedures cost about $1,000.

If you are interested in microblading, always look for a licensed esthetician, accredited with either the American Association of Micropigmentation or the Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals (SPCP).

Additionally, you need to take proper after-care to achieve the desired results, as follows:

  • Wash the area using antibacterial soap and water
  • Avoid makeup on the brow area while it is actively healing
  • Do not pick at the scabs
  • Don’t sleep on the face for at least 10 days after the procedure
  • Avoid direct sunlight or tanning for at least a month afterward
  • Reduce the use of moisturizers
  • Avoiding swimming and long showers for 7-10 days
  • Don’t use facial scrubs or peels for at least a month afterward

Moreover, if you experience the following symptoms of tattoo infection, immediately contact your doctor or esthetician:

  • diarrhea
  • nausea and vomiting
  • fever, especially over 102°F
  • muscle aches and pain
  • extreme or unquenchable thirst
  • prolonged or severe pain, redness, and swelling
  • sores with thick, white or yellow fluid
  • hard, red, raised bumps or wounds
