Artist Turns Ordinary Stones Into Adorable Animals That Fit Inside Your Palm

Akie Nakata, a self-taught Japanese artist loved picking up stones since she was a child, and this eventually became her inspiration, as she turns pebbles into beautiful work of art.

The exceptional collection of small painted stones of this Japanese artist has taken tiny cute animals to a whole new level. Her talent has made these creations some of the most beautiful ones we have ever seen.

She chooses stones that she sees as having their own character, and brings them to life by painting on them using acrylic paints.

Thank you for reading my earlier post about my recent experience. Some of you have also sent me some encouraging messages, each of which I read with gratitude. I might not be responding to individual message; please accept my “heart icon” to your message as a thank-you from me. I will now focus my attention on working with each and every stone I encounter and creating my art, not discouraged by someone else heartlessly copying my style. Thank you. To express my appreciation, I am posting my recent work. Bluebird painted on a natural shaped stone. This sweet bluebird has a perfect 3D shape all around, and is palm sized: W40 x D35 x H35mm. One of a kind “happy piece.” Hope he makes you smile, and see you again when I return! #bluebird #thankful #painting #art #stoneart #stonepainting #rockart #rockpainting #paintedstones #naturalshape

One day, while she was walking along a riverbank, she noticed a peculiar pebble resembled a rabbit, and this gave her the idea to start converting stones into these remarkable pieces of work.

Akie believes stones have their own intentions, so her encounters with them serve as cues, and she starts painting what she sees in them.

She establishes a connection with the chosen stone. She adds that she also respects the stones in toto, so she never processes them, and would never cut off an edge to alter the shape.

The end results are life-like, intricate and beautifully detailed pebbles. Yet, she claims that she tries to find life in all stones she picks. Using acrylic paint, she paints various animals, from dogs and cats to birds and mice.

However, a piece of work is completed only when she sees the eyes of the animal are alive and look back at her, and not when she is done with drawing the details.

Akie believes the stones have a soul and stories to tell, and even admits talking to them at times while holding them.

The skillful artist says that when she thinks of the long time it takes for a stone to change from a huge boulder in the mountains to the size and shape it has, she thinks of the history of the earth that the stone has silently witnessed over the millennia.

Her creations are simply adorable and incredibly realistic, so make sure you check them out!
