The unpleasant side effects of chemotherapy and radiation, such as: fatigue, vomiting, loss of appetite, muscle aches and joint pain -- can be mitigated by folk remedies that are made from ginger, nettle, raspberry leaf…
Statistics show that the number of people affected by cancer is rising every year dramatically. According to the World Health Organization estimates for 2030, the number of cancer patients in very developed countries (like the US and the EU) will increase by slightly more than one-third, while in underdeveloped.
This information has recently been put forward, for the Croatian media, head of the Cancer Registry in neighboring Croatia, Ariana Znaor.
Modern medicine, although in recent years has greatly advanced, has still no real answer to this scourge. They continue the treatment, which consists of surgical removal of the tumor, radiation and chemotherapy.
One cure destroys another one
Although the drugs used in chemotherapy (anti-cancer drugs) help in the destruction of malignant cells and slower the spread of a malignant process, they unfortunately have a host of unpleasant side effects that further burden the already exhausted and affected body.
The first ones affected are the cells of hair roots, which is why almost all people who undergo chemotherapy lose their hair. In addition, some other things which are affected are: the blood cells, bone marrow, mucous membranes in the mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestines… Fortunately this damage is usually transient and in most cases it leads to tissue regeneration.
Almost all patients who undergo chemotherapy experience nausea, vomiting, pain in muscles and bones, fatigue, loss of appetite…
The doctor oncologist determines the combination of drugs that will have maximum effect cause the least side effects. In addition, the oncologist, along with chemotherapy, prescribes medications that will at least soothe the unwanted effects of chemotherapy and radiation.
How much can herbs actually help us?
Although medicine has not yet officially confirmed that a medicinal plant can mitigate the consequences of chemotherapy and radiation, there’s only a small number of patients who won’t turn to some folk remedy after chemotherapy and radiation: usually tea blends, and bee products -- alone or in combination with herbs.
Artichoke keeps the liver
Since the liver is the organ responsible for “processing” of drugs, it is clear that the chemotherapy will affect her with all its adverse consequences. Drugs used in the treatment of cancerous diseases, first slow the recovery of the liver, which can adversely affect the work of the whole organism.
It is therefore recommended that, after the end of chemotherapy, to implement Herbal Therapy of artichokes. Cure is taken in a way that 5 ml of artichoke is poured into half a glass of water, half an hour before a meal, and also 2-3 times per day. It isn’t recommended to take this therapy during the course of chemotherapy, as there may be a contraindication.
Raspberry’s leaf eliminates diarrhea
Diarrhea is a relatively rare side effect of chemotherapy and can be rehabilitated with raspberry or blackberry’s leaf tea. A tablespoon of leaves is enough to overflow with 2-2, 5 dl of water, so let it stay that way for about ten minutes and strain. Drink hot tea 2-3 times a day until the diarrhea is gone. With this tea, you can also drink probiotics.
Linseed oil boosts organism
The essence of fat, omega-3 fatty acids improves the general condition of the body, strengthens the immune system and stimulates the formation of blood cells. Take a tablespoon of flaxseed oil along with fasting cheese or cereal. Make sure that the oil is bought from reliable pharmacies, and make sure it’s fresh.
Ginger reduces nausea
It is clinically proven that this bitter-flavored plant, is anti-nauseant, especially those which are caused by drugs used in chemotherapy. Ginger works efficiently if taken in the form of juice.
The root should be grated, drained with your fingers, and the scoop yellow liquid should be poured into half a glass of water and drunk three times during the day. In order to be fresh, make a new juice every time.
Powder of ginger can be used instead of juice. Given that it’s spicier than juice, it’s enough to take one-third of a teaspoon and stir in 1 dl water. People with gallstones should carefully use ginger, because they stimulate the secretion of bile.
Nettle against infection
Drugs used in chemotherapy, other than malignant, attack the bone marrow cells, causing a fall in the value -- erythrocytes (red blood cells), and lymphocytes, granulocytes, platelets… The result is fatigue. Some people, during chemotherapy, are prone to infections (due to reduced mune cells) to the extent that is necessary to discontinue chemotherapy.
Nettle leaf returns iron and minerals to the body, having positive effects on kidney function and preventing their damage as a result of chemotherapy.
You can make nettle tea by boiling 1 liter of water, getting it off the heat, and add 5-6 tablespoons of nettle leaves to the water. Cover it and let it stay for 10-15 minutes. Then strain it, leaving it in a glass bottle and drink it during the day, preferably between meals.
Coverings after radiation
The therapy oncologist prescribes the patient with cancer includes radiation therapy, which comes after the surgical removal of the tumor and chemotherapy.
Cancer cells divide rapidly, which are increasingly sensitive to the effects of gamma rays that damage their DNA, thus destroying them. However, as well as chemotherapy, gamma rays destroy healthy cells too, but most common side effects are skin burns.
Today’s devices used during radiation are much safer than those that had been used earlier, but the burns, redness, skin tightening, skin burning sensation appear again.
After the radiation therapy, make sure to warm it up well, until it boils, 1 -- 1,5 dl water, remove it from the heat, add a tablespoon of marshmallow flowers, cover it and leave it for 10 minutes and then strain it.
Soak gauze and hold it for 10-15 minutes in a place that was exposed to radiation. This procedure is repeated twice a day, and every time after doing it, lubricate the skin with oil, which is prepared like this:
- 100 ml discharge calendula
- -- 10 drops of essential oil of German chamomile
- -- 30 drops of essential oil of Lavender
Lavender essential oil encourages skin regeneration, while German chamomile and marigold have strong anti-inflammatory effect.
Dr. Sefik Beslic: Tea has a positive effect in both healthy and sick people
“Science has not yet confirmed that some kind of tea has a positive effect when it comes to cancer, but teas, or liquids generally, have a positive effect on the human body, regardless of whether in sick or healthy people, and from this we can conclude that the selection of tea in any case positive” -- he explained to Dr. Aura. Beslic.
Bee products help the body put up with chemotherapy
People who take chemotherapy are especially recommended bee products: honey, pollen, royal jelly… Bee products are rich in vitamins, minerals, acids and other substances, which feed the body, lift its immunity, improve blood count, which ultimately help the body efficiently and with less consequences submit chemotherapy and radiation.
It should be noted that patients suffering from cancerous diseases shouldn’t take bee products on their own, especially royal jelly, but to consult their physician before consumption, and bee products should be purchased exclusively at some well known beekeepers.
